Chapter 24
I headed toward the blacksmithâs with the old duke.
His hobby was weapon development.
He enjoyed drawing up blueprints, commissioning their creation, and testing the finished productsâit was his only real joy.
âWell, a lot of these have even gone into commercial production, so itâs not just a hobby.â
One of the main businesses of the Zebert family was weapons manufacturing. Weapons made from high-quality ore mined around their territory were famous across the entire continent.
âThose shields that block dark magic were particularly good.â
And with the recent wars sweeping the continent, the business must have been booming, whether he intended it or not.
âWow, itâs huge!â
âItâs probably the largest in the empire.â
As if to prove that reputation, the blacksmithâs complex was enormous.
To exaggerate a little, it almost looked like a small village.
âWelcome.â
We entered the largest building among the many, greeted casually by the owner.
The heat from the blazing furnaces hit us immediately. Clang, clangâthe irregular sound of metal being struck echoed.
âHand it over! My weapon!â
A thug⊠no, the old duke shouted.
The owner, shirtless and puffing on a pipe, lifted his eyes.
The young-looking man had brown hair tied haphazardly and smudges of soot across his face.
â…Youâre a late-born, I see?â
Thud. A large hammer dropped to the floor.
âStill as incompetent as ever.â
âHoh.â
The owner bent over to peer at me, curiosity in his eyes.
âPut out the fire.â
The old duke said it disapprovingly, and the owner pouted.
âComing to a blacksmith and telling me to put out the fireâŠâ
Cough, cough.
A sudden gust of wind pushed the smoke from his pipe toward us.
The old duke clicked his tongue and plucked me up, setting me down on the opposite side.
âCanât you put it out immediately?!â
âAh.â
The owner finally realized he was holding a pipe in his mouth.
âOh⊠sorry about that.â
Swish, swish. He waved away the smoke.
âSo, whatâs this kid about? Donât tell me⊠leadâŠâ
Clang. The old duke lightly kicked a hammer aside.
âDo you even keep up with the outside world? By the way⊠maybe itâs time to renovate this place, huh?â
ââŠThis anvil wonât do. Nor my furnace. Nothing will do!â
âThen enough chatterâhand over the sword!â
The owner shook his head vigorously at the shouted command.
âGeez, the old man really has a temperâŠâ
âI can hear you.â
âYour hearing is still intact! Is that a relief?â
âUgh, that guy.â
Hmm, I couldnât tell if their relationship was good or bad.
In any case, seeing the owner treat the old duke so casually made it clear he wasnât an easy man either.
The owner rummaged through somewhere and suddenly pulled out a sword.
Crash! He swept a table aside and placed the sword on it.
âHrmph!â
The old dukeâs eyes flashed as he gazed at the sword.
âIâll hammer it a few more times, but this magical ore refinement is more troublesome than expectedâŠâ
âShouldnât the handle use Eprion instead?â
âHm, maybe. But Eprion reacts poorly to sunlight at certain angles.â
The two adults began seriously geeking out over weapons. I cautiously backed away, watching carefully.
âWhere are you going?â
He knew?
âI just wanted to look aroundâŠâ
âNo! Donât you know how dangerous it is here?â
âThen Iâll wait outside!â
The old duke looked between the weapons and me, weighing his options.
âIâll behave!â
I put on my best obedient child expression. The owner, who had been quietly observing, sniffed and interjected.
âWant to do a little hammering if youâre bored?â
âHuh? Hammering? Me?â
âOr watch the tempering⊠ah, you could pick out some nice pieces of metal over there and keep them.â
âWhy are you making a kid do things!â
ââŠ? When I was your age, that was the most fun thing to do.â
The owner looked genuinely baffled.
âThatâs why you grew up obsessed with weapons!â
âHa, why are you praising me all of a sudden?â
âItâs not praise!â
Hmm, he really isnât someone to underestimate.
âHehe⊠Iâll go wait outside.â
I quietly slipped out of the blacksmithâs.
Outside, a familiar face was waiting.
No wonder the old duke let me go so easilyâhe knew a guard was following.
âSir Leon, uncle⊠I mean, senior!â
ââŠLong time no see.â
Leon, with his blue hair, looked down at me. A strange expression flickered through his normally stern eyes.
âLong time! But why are you looking at me like that?â
âWhy havenât you ever joined the knight orderâŠâ
âHm?â
âUm, nothing.â
I tilted my head and continued walking.
Leon followed.
âWhere are we going?â
âI want to go explore!â
I pointed to a small shop near the blacksmith.
Just as I saw on the map, there it was.
A magical ore shop!
âOre shop?â
âNot allowed?â
âWell, itâs right next door, so I guess itâs fineâŠâ
âThe old duke will take a while. Right, senior?â
âHm, canât be helped.â
Leon subtly took my hand. After instructing another nearby knight, we headed into the ore shop.
âWow, it sparkles! So pretty.â
The shop was empty, perhaps the owner stepped out. My eyes gleamed as I explored.
Of course, I stopped at the display of magical ores.
All shapes and colors.
A smile crept onto my lips.
âNo wonderâthey fight monsters so often, they must have plenty of magical ore.â
Slaying monsters could yield magical ore. Mining could also yield it.
The quality varied, and the most powerful ores came from monsters.
Like game items, really.
Processed, magical ore becomes a magical tool.
âSimply put, these stones are a primary material for magical tools.â
Of course, ordinary people couldnât make magical tools so easily.
âBack in the kingdom, I used these ores to make magical toolsâŠâ
Our kingdom imported magical ores. Some existed domestically, but Zelox ores were the best quality.
Perhaps because the land teemed with vicious monsters.
âThe magical tools we made were then sold across the continent.â
âAh.â
My eyes widened as I scanned the displays.
âFound itâthe barrier stone.â
A translucent, pale purple stone filled my vision.
âWhat are you staring at?â
âSenior! Senior!â
I tugged on Leonâs sleeve.
âThere are so many pale purple stones here. What are they used for?â
I asked, testing him deliberately.
âTheyâre mostly useless magical ore. The color is unusual, so sometimes used for sword decorations, but theyâre too heavy to be practical.â
âReally?â
I held one up to the lightâit was perfectly clear, no impurities. Quite a product indeedâŠ
âThey have little demand because theyâre useless.â
That wasnât true. There wasnât demand because no one knew how to use them.
âIâm the only one in the kingdom who knows how to make magical tools with these barrier stones.â
I gripped the purple stone tightly.
âThis is it.â
A way to protect myself and uncle.
âIâll use this ore to create a barrier over Zelox. Like the magical kingdomâan unbreakable shield.â
The magical kingdom had been a fortress for a millennium.
No one could invade it, and no attack could harm it.
Those who didnât know thought the wizards were casting amazing protection spells, but it was really the magical tools embedded with ancient barrier spells throughout the kingdom.
Spells no longer present anywhere else in the world.
âI can do this.â
I was born with the ability to hold all magic circles in my mindâancient or modern, it didnât matter.
The problem, though, was surprisingly practicalâŠ
âIâll need to buy a massive amount of this oreâŠâ
To cover all of Zelox, of course, Iâd need a huge quantity.
I exhaled shallowly, and Leonâs gaze fell on me.
I hadnât even noticed the large shadow behind me while lost in thought.
âIâll also need a secret lab to make the magical toolsâŠâ
Could I do it?
I sighed again.
âKiddo, what exactly are you doing here?â
But it wasnât easy⊠Forget the lab, how could I even buyâŠ
âI donât have moneyâŠâ
ââŠâŠ.â
ââŠâŠ.â
Gnash.
âHm?â
The sound of teeth grinding sharply made me look up.
