Chapter 25
âOld Duke?â
I didnât notice when he had come, but the old duke was standing right behind me, his eyes blazing like fire.
âThat Leviathan⊠that damn bratâŠâ
Suddenly?
âRubian, didnât His Excellency give you any pocket money?â
Even Sir Leon bent one knee and leaned forward, demanding an answer.
What are they talking about?
Without realizing that my thoughts had escaped in a sigh, I looked at the two furious men with a bewildered expression.
âWhat do you want! Huh?â
âEh?â
âWhat is it that you want, making your ears droop like that! Speak up immediately!â
The old duke pounded his chest and roared.
W-what I want?
âTell us quickly, Rubian. Itâs a command from your senior.â
Why is even Sir Leon acting like this?
Just then, the shop door squeaked open, and a familiar face appeared.
âLower your voices. Itâs echoing all the way outside. Itâs embarrassing, really.â
âUncle!â
I ran to him, delighted.
Leviathan Uncle rested his hand lightly on my head.
He had returned from the knight order wearing light armor, looking as impressive as ever.
âI was nearby and thought Iâd check in. Did you cause another accident?â
âI didnât cause an accident!â
Really! I havenât caused one yet!
As I stared wide-eyed and smiling, Uncle narrowed his eyes slightly.
âYour Excellency, youâre here?â
Sir Leon gritted his teeth as he bowed.
I thought I heard something like âKyukheuh⊠yes sirâŠ,â but maybe notâŠ
ââŠ? Your expression seems insubordinate, Leon.â
âYouâre mistaken.â
Uncle tilted his head.
At that moment, a metal-like fist flew toward me. Uncle easily dodged.
âYou brat!â
âWhy are you doing this again?â
âYou didnât give the kid a single coin! What were you thinking?â
Silence fell.
ââŠEh?â
Like a broken doll, I replied a moment too late.
âShe wants something, but she doesnât have money, so sheâs stomping her feet in frustration, isnât she!â
Bang, bangâthe stomping was from the old duke.
âN-no, itâs not⊠I mean, well, itâs not exactly like thatâŠâ
Of course, I did want something! But how did they know?!
âAh⊠my blood pressureâŠâ
The old duke grabbed the back of his neck, staggering.
âReally?â
Uncle crouched slightly to look me in the eyes.
âDid you want something?â
He almost looked pleased. I felt a little embarrassed and hesitated.
âI⊠I do want something, but itâs not like I need it right this second.â
âSay it. What is it?â
âUhâŠâ
âRubian.â
Pressed by his voice, I had no choice but to point with my finger.
All six pairs of eyes in the room followed my gesture carefully.
âHere⊠on this shelfâŠâ
I pointed shyly.
ââŠTo over there?â
My hand traced a long line.
If Iâm going to get it, I thought it might as well be everythingâŠ
ââŠ.â
Uncle was silent for a moment.
Maybe I overdid it?
âNo, actually⊠I just want this oneâŠâ
âCall the owner.â
At that moment, Uncle sprang to his feet.
Sir Leon moved like lightning. The old duke scratched his chest again, muttering about how ticklish it was.
Soon, the shop owner, who had gone out briefly, hurried in. Uncle said to him:
âIâm buying this shop. Name your price.â
âY-your Excellency?â
âI have no interest in buying cheap things for a hobby. Name it high.â
âŠExcuse me?
I had entered as a customer and somehow came out as the shop owner myselfâŠ
ââŠ.â
Rustle. I stared blankly at the papers in my bag.
The shop deed was now firmly in my hands.
âShould I just send a box of the purple stones to the castle?â
âUh, yes.â
The shop owner asked, and I replied dumbfoundedly.
Having unintentionally become the shop owner, I now had the right to handle the magical ore as I wishedâuncle couldnât intervene in this.
âYou like stone ornaments, huh.â
âHaha⊠theyâre prettyâŠâ
âPurple magical stones are enough for me!â
Of course, I had thought it would be nice to have green, red, or even blue stones if possible.
âWell, canât be helped.â
It wasnât polite to refuse gifts.
I reluctantly signed the papers. I only asked for the purple stones from the warehouse, not the other ores.
âThis box is small!â
The old duke clicked his tongue beside me.
Uncle was instructing the shop owner on various things: only send stones free of toxins, package them so the child could handle them easilyâŠ
Bored, I left the shop, leaving Uncle and Sir Leon behind.
âDo you want to go somewhere else?â
The old duke asked as he followed.
âHmm, actuallyâŠâ
Just then:
âHahaha! Grandpa! Ticklish!â
With that innocent laugh, a small cart rolled toward us.
The driver looked friendly, and beside him sat a young child, presumably his grandson.
âOh, you littleâŠâ
At the same time, the child grabbed the reins, and the cart wobbled as it came straight toward us.
âWatch out!â
The old duke grabbed me quickly.
I thought it would be fine; after all⊠the old duke was bigger and stronger than even a massive mountain.
But unexpectedly, his large body wavered.
âOld Duke!â
âUgh.â
Crash. We tumbled to the ground.
âOh my! Are you okay? Iâm so sorry! What should I do!â
The cart owner hurried over in a panic.
âChild, are you alright?â
The old duke, lying in the dirt, quickly turned to check on me. I had fallen on my rear, but he had shielded me, so I wasnât badly hurt.
âI-Iâm fine. Just a bit dirty.â
âLetâs go. You said you ordered clothes, right?â
âThatâs true, butâŠâ
My gaze kept drifting toward the spot where the old duke had been.
âHe didnât look me in the eye.â
âThat damn body of yours.â
As if I were a criminal.
I felt heavy at heart.
