Chapter 27

“M-Milady has gone out.”

At the butler’s words that Clarissa wasn’t home, Damon’s shoulders slumped.

“She didn’t say where she was going?”

“Pardon? Ah
 no, she didn’t.”

“Send people to find her. Tell her I have something urgent to say.”

“Ah! Th-that is Milady’s carriage.”

At the entrance of the garden, a carriage bearing the Craig family’s serpent crest was approaching.

Damon stopped in place, unable to control his pounding heart as he waited for Clarissa.

Clarissa
!

For her, it had only been a few days.

But for Damon, it felt like meeting her again after decades.

His chest tightened. He could barely breathe, and his eyes burned.

He wanted to embrace her fiercely—kiss her desperately.

I missed you, Clarissa

A surge of longing rose from deep within his throat.

The carriage slowly came to a stop, and Clarissa stepped out.

Damon strode forward, about to reach out his hand—

But the moment Clarissa shot him a cold, sunken gaze, his body froze like stone.

“You’re back, Damon.”

“
Yes.”

“You’re not in good condition. Why are you standing out here? Do you have to go out again? If so, have a safe trip.”

Clarissa brushed past him.

A cold wind seemed to blow as Damon’s shoulders trembled.

“I just got back. I was told I won’t be able to go out for a while
the wound pierced through my chest.”

So worry about me, Clarissa

They said it’s a miracle I survived.

That’s right
I’m of Rochen. That’s why I lived. The child of Rochen
 the one you saved—that’s me.

But the words never left his mouth.

Why are you treating me like a nuisance? Why won’t you even look at me?

Her cold indifference pierced his heart.

For the first time in his life, Damon felt something unfamiliar—

hurt.

“Clarissa.”

All he could do was follow behind her and call her name.

“If you can’t go out, then you’ll be home tomorrow.”

She spoke without stopping.

“Then we can divorce tomorrow. I went to the temple as you said and got the divorce papers.”

“
!!”

“As for alimony, we can proceed as you proposed at the Rite River.”

She slowly turned to face him.

Her violet eyes, once warm and bright, were now cold and distant.

“After you sign the papers, please leave the estate. Good night, Damon.”

With a calm farewell, Clarissa disappeared down the eastern corridor.

The path she walked shimmered with moisture—

As if she had just come back from playing in water.

Strange.

Look at me
I came back from the brink of death

Damon stood there, unable to move, staring at the empty corridor where she vanished.

For the first time—

He felt what she must have felt all those nights.

Watching him leave
 alone.

You must have been unbearably lonely
 terribly alone.

I’m sorry, Clarissa
 I was wrong.

Damon remained standing there for a long time, unable to leave.

The Next Morning

Having stayed awake all night, Damon went to the drawing room early.

Clarissa arrived later than him—

Looking unusually lighthearted
 even slightly excited.

“I tried to come quickly, but I’m late. My bedroom is tucked away so far in the corner.”

She spoke casually.

“I’ll be using your room from now on. While you were being treated, I had it cleaned up.”

“
I heard.”

“I’ve already moved most of my belongings to the Cyan Merchant Guild’s secret office. The rest should be getting loaded onto the carriage now.”

Clarissa took out the divorce papers and laid them neatly on the table.

Her gaze urged him to stamp them immediately and leave.

Damon stared at her—

Her eyes. Her nose. Her lips.

His trembling hand clenched into a fist.

Something about her felt
 different.

As if she had returned from another world.

If only he had paid even a little attention before—

They wouldn’t be sitting here like this, facing divorce.

While I turned back time to reach this moment
you must have had your own journey.

Where did Rochen’s power take you?

A place without a family that used you
without a husband who ignored you?

Seeing her eyes sparkling in the sunlight made his chest ache.

He wanted to hold her—right now.

“I’ll stamp it first,” Clarissa said.

“Let’s not turn this into a contest over who signs first.”

Just as she was about to press the family seal—

Rip—!

Damon snatched the document and tore it in half.

“Damon! Wh-what are you doing?!”

“Wife.”

“Hi—! Wh-why are you calling me that
?!”

“I cannot agree to this divorce.”

His voice was steady.

“You are the savior of my life.”

I want to live well with you.

He swallowed those words.

He had never learned how to live a normal life.

He had only lived for revenge.

But now—

A desire he had never known before had taken root.

He wanted to live as Clarissa’s man.

“And you think I’ll just accept that now?” she snapped.

“Miranda! Bring glue. I’ll have to piece the papers back together.”

“I will not divorce.”

“That’s your opinion. We agreed—leave this house immediately!”

Her face flushed red with anger.

Damon stepped forward—

And dropped to his knees.

“I’m sorry
 I’m truly
 sorry, Clarissa.”

“Y-You’ve lost your mind.”

“You can insult me more. You can even hit me—I won’t resist.”

His voice broke.

“Just
let me remain as your husband.”

He pressed his face against the back of her hand.

Hot tears poured down endlessly.

Meanwhile — At the Racton Ducal Estate

A carriage came to a halt.

The Duke of Racton stepped out, his expression dark and twisted.

Damn it
 everything’s gone to hell!

After the engagement ceremony, Valentine and Aileen had gone to the Rite River for a blessing ritual.

The moment Valentine stepped down—

A scream rang out.

There, Damon Craig was found—

An arrow piercing straight through his torso.

“The antidote
 for the Tara flower
 hurry
”

At those words, the Duke clenched his fist, trembling with rage.

Ingis Racton
 you’ve lost your mind!

There was only one person who used poison arrows coated with Tara flower extract—

Ingis Racton.

The Tara flower grew only within Racton territory.

Its poison was so deadly that even touching it meant instant death.

No ordinary assassin would dare use it.

And to fire such a precise shot—from across the river—piercing the heart?

There was no doubt.

It was Ingis.

Worse—

An assassination attempt during a royal engagement celebration meant treason.

As expected, the Emperor was furious.

The Emperor knew all too well—

The Tara flower had once helped him seize the throne.

And the one who supplied it

Was the Duke of Racton.

So of course—

He suspected the Duke.

“This isn’t about Damon Craig,” the Duke muttered.

“The Emperor is afraid
that we might be targeting him next.”

If the Emperor died—

Valentine would become Emperor.

And Aileen, Empress.

No matter how much the Duke tried to explain, he was denied audience.

Furious, he roared:

“Faber! Call all my sons—except Aileen—to the study. Now!”

Soon, five sons gathered.

The Duke drew his sword.

The killing intent in his eyes filled the room.

He never drew his blade without spilling blood.

“Ingis. Step forward.”

“F-Father
”

“Don’t make me repeat myself!”

The sword trembled, emitting a chilling aura.

Ingis collapsed to his knees, shaking.

“I-I only did what brother Federic told me—!”

Before he could finish—

The Duke’s blade came down.

Clang!

Another sword blocked it.

Federic Racton.

“Stop,” Federic said coldly.

“You’re not really going to kill your son over shooting an arrow at that bastard.”

“I can. And I must.”

The Duke struck Federic across the face with the scabbard—

Then aimed his blade at Ingis’s throat.

“If Ingis dies, the family will suffer no consequences.”

Blood dripped from the blade.

“P-Please
 Father
 spare me
”

Ingis sobbed.

But to the Duke—

One son meant nothing.

He had many.

Even without illegitimate children like Ian—

All his sons were powerful knights.

Losing one changed nothing.

“I-I’ll leave! I’ll go far away—just spare me!”

“You worm! If you shoot an arrow, kill your target!”

The Duke snarled.

“You couldn’t even do that—and now you want to run?!”

“
He didn’t die?” Ingis blinked.

“Then I’ll go finish him—!”

“You fool!”

Slash—!

The Duke’s sword spun through the air.

Blood splattered everywhere.

But the one who collapsed—

Was not who anyone expected.
