Chapter 27
âM-Milady has gone out.â
At the butlerâs words that Clarissa wasnât home, Damonâs shoulders slumped.
âShe didnât say where she was going?â
âPardon? Ah⊠no, she didnât.â
âSend people to find her. Tell her I have something urgent to say.â
âAh! Th-that is Miladyâs carriage.â
At the entrance of the garden, a carriage bearing the Craig familyâs serpent crest was approaching.
Damon stopped in place, unable to control his pounding heart as he waited for Clarissa.
ClarissaâŠ!
For her, it had only been a few days.
But for Damon, it felt like meeting her again after decades.
His chest tightened. He could barely breathe, and his eyes burned.
He wanted to embrace her fiercelyâkiss her desperately.
I missed you, ClarissaâŠ
A surge of longing rose from deep within his throat.
The carriage slowly came to a stop, and Clarissa stepped out.
Damon strode forward, about to reach out his handâ
But the moment Clarissa shot him a cold, sunken gaze, his body froze like stone.
âYouâre back, Damon.â
ââŠYes.â
âYouâre not in good condition. Why are you standing out here? Do you have to go out again? If so, have a safe trip.â
Clarissa brushed past him.
A cold wind seemed to blow as Damonâs shoulders trembled.
âI just got back. I was told I wonât be able to go out for a while⊠the wound pierced through my chest.â
So worry about me, ClarissaâŠ
They said itâs a miracle I survived.
Thatâs right⊠Iâm of Rochen. Thatâs why I lived. The child of Rochen⊠the one you savedâthatâs me.
But the words never left his mouth.
Why are you treating me like a nuisance? Why wonât you even look at me?
Her cold indifference pierced his heart.
For the first time in his life, Damon felt something unfamiliarâ
hurt.
âClarissa.â
All he could do was follow behind her and call her name.
âIf you canât go out, then youâll be home tomorrow.â
She spoke without stopping.
âThen we can divorce tomorrow. I went to the temple as you said and got the divorce papers.â
ââŠ!!â
âAs for alimony, we can proceed as you proposed at the Rite River.â
She slowly turned to face him.
Her violet eyes, once warm and bright, were now cold and distant.
âAfter you sign the papers, please leave the estate. Good night, Damon.â
With a calm farewell, Clarissa disappeared down the eastern corridor.
The path she walked shimmered with moistureâ
As if she had just come back from playing in water.
Strange.
âŠLook at me⊠I came back from the brink of deathâŠ
Damon stood there, unable to move, staring at the empty corridor where she vanished.
For the first timeâ
He felt what she must have felt all those nights.
Watching him leave⊠alone.
You must have been unbearably lonely⊠terribly alone.
Iâm sorry, Clarissa⊠I was wrong.
Damon remained standing there for a long time, unable to leave.
The Next Morning
Having stayed awake all night, Damon went to the drawing room early.
Clarissa arrived later than himâ
Looking unusually lighthearted⊠even slightly excited.
âI tried to come quickly, but Iâm late. My bedroom is tucked away so far in the corner.â
She spoke casually.
âIâll be using your room from now on. While you were being treated, I had it cleaned up.â
ââŠI heard.â
âIâve already moved most of my belongings to the Cyan Merchant Guildâs secret office. The rest should be getting loaded onto the carriage now.â
Clarissa took out the divorce papers and laid them neatly on the table.
Her gaze urged him to stamp them immediately and leave.
Damon stared at herâ
Her eyes. Her nose. Her lips.
His trembling hand clenched into a fist.
Something about her felt⊠different.
As if she had returned from another world.
If only he had paid even a little attention beforeâ
They wouldnât be sitting here like this, facing divorce.
While I turned back time to reach this moment⊠you must have had your own journey.
Where did Rochenâs power take you?
A place without a family that used you⊠without a husband who ignored you?
Seeing her eyes sparkling in the sunlight made his chest ache.
He wanted to hold herâright now.
âIâll stamp it first,â Clarissa said.
âLetâs not turn this into a contest over who signs first.â
Just as she was about to press the family sealâ
Ripâ!
Damon snatched the document and tore it in half.
âDamon! Wh-what are you doing?!â
âWife.â
âHiâ! Wh-why are you calling me thatâŠ?!â
âI cannot agree to this divorce.â
His voice was steady.
âYou are the savior of my life.â
I want to live well with you.
He swallowed those words.
He had never learned how to live a normal life.
He had only lived for revenge.
But nowâ
A desire he had never known before had taken root.
He wanted to live as Clarissaâs man.
âAnd you think Iâll just accept that now?â she snapped.
âMiranda! Bring glue. Iâll have to piece the papers back together.â
âI will not divorce.â
âThatâs your opinion. We agreedâleave this house immediately!â
Her face flushed red with anger.
Damon stepped forwardâ
And dropped to his knees.
âIâm sorry⊠Iâm truly⊠sorry, Clarissa.â
âY-Youâve lost your mind.â
âYou can insult me more. You can even hit meâI wonât resist.â
His voice broke.
âJust⊠let me remain as your husband.â
He pressed his face against the back of her hand.
Hot tears poured down endlessly.
Meanwhile â At the Racton Ducal Estate
A carriage came to a halt.
The Duke of Racton stepped out, his expression dark and twisted.
Damn it⊠everythingâs gone to hell!
After the engagement ceremony, Valentine and Aileen had gone to the Rite River for a blessing ritual.
The moment Valentine stepped downâ
A scream rang out.
There, Damon Craig was foundâ
An arrow piercing straight through his torso.
âThe antidote⊠for the Tara flower⊠hurryâŠâ
At those words, the Duke clenched his fist, trembling with rage.
Ingis Racton⊠youâve lost your mind!
There was only one person who used poison arrows coated with Tara flower extractâ
Ingis Racton.
The Tara flower grew only within Racton territory.
Its poison was so deadly that even touching it meant instant death.
No ordinary assassin would dare use it.
And to fire such a precise shotâfrom across the riverâpiercing the heart?
There was no doubt.
It was Ingis.
Worseâ
An assassination attempt during a royal engagement celebration meant treason.
As expected, the Emperor was furious.
The Emperor knew all too wellâ
The Tara flower had once helped him seize the throne.
And the one who supplied itâŠ
Was the Duke of Racton.
So of courseâ
He suspected the Duke.
âThis isnât about Damon Craig,â the Duke muttered.
âThe Emperor is afraid⊠that we might be targeting him next.â
If the Emperor diedâ
Valentine would become Emperor.
And Aileen, Empress.
No matter how much the Duke tried to explain, he was denied audience.
Furious, he roared:
âFaber! Call all my sonsâexcept Aileenâto the study. Now!â
Soon, five sons gathered.
The Duke drew his sword.
The killing intent in his eyes filled the room.
He never drew his blade without spilling blood.
âIngis. Step forward.â
âF-FatherâŠâ
âDonât make me repeat myself!â
The sword trembled, emitting a chilling aura.
Ingis collapsed to his knees, shaking.
âI-I only did what brother Federic told meâ!â
Before he could finishâ
The Dukeâs blade came down.
Clang!
Another sword blocked it.
Federic Racton.
âStop,â Federic said coldly.
âYouâre not really going to kill your son over shooting an arrow at that bastard.â
âI can. And I must.â
The Duke struck Federic across the face with the scabbardâ
Then aimed his blade at Ingisâs throat.
âIf Ingis dies, the family will suffer no consequences.â
Blood dripped from the blade.
âP-Please⊠Father⊠spare meâŠâ
Ingis sobbed.
But to the Dukeâ
One son meant nothing.
He had many.
Even without illegitimate children like Ianâ
All his sons were powerful knights.
Losing one changed nothing.
âI-Iâll leave! Iâll go far awayâjust spare me!â
âYou worm! If you shoot an arrow, kill your target!â
The Duke snarled.
âYou couldnât even do thatâand now you want to run?!â
ââŠHe didnât die?â Ingis blinked.
âThen Iâll go finish himâ!â
âYou fool!â
Slashâ!
The Dukeâs sword spun through the air.
Blood splattered everywhere.
But the one who collapsedâ
Was not who anyone expected.
