Chapter 3
The Black Ironwood was burning.
Although it was said to be impossible to use as firewood because it didnât catch fire, as expected, the demonâs flames were far stronger than ordinary fire.
âThey said itâs Blue Flame⊠but itâs not really that blue, huh?â
The core of the flames glimmered with blue, but you had to look closely to notice it.
âWell, does the color really matter? As long as itâs burning, thatâs fine!â
I sank into the sofa, satisfied as I watched the dancing flames. The warmth spreading from the fireplace relaxed my frozen body. Finally, I wouldnât have to shiver from Erelâs ridiculous cold anymore.
âThereâs plenty of Black Ironwood to use as firewood, so I just need to keep this fire going.â
âHey.â
Unlike me, completely satisfied with the situation, the demon looked displeased. But I had already gotten everything I wanted from him, so I no longer felt the need to cater to his mood.
âYouâre still standing there?â
I waved my hand halfheartedly in response.
âMy wish is fulfilled now, so go home.â
âGo home?â
âYes. Home. Donât demons have homes? Go back to where you were living.â
I didnât know what demon neighborhoods looked like, but since their appearance was similar to humans, I guessed their lifestyle wouldnât be too different.
âThey probably have homes and families too.â
But the demon frowned, as if he couldnât understand.
âYou called me.â
âYes.â
âThen you should take responsibility.â
âResponsibility? Why me?â
âYou knew what it meant to call a demonâs name and make a contract, didnât you?â
Of course I did. When you call a demonâs name, he appears and grants your wish.
âIsnât that all there is to it?â
The demon banged his chest in frustration at my blank expression.
âThis contract is a lifelong contract!â
â…Excuse me? Lifelong contract?â
âYes! I have to stay by your side until you die! Constantly granting your wishes!â
ââŠWhat?â
What is he saying? I only wanted to light the fireplace. I thought after granting a wish, the demon would go back to his home. A lifelong contract? So I have to have this annoying thing attached to me all the time? I never wanted such a burden.
âYouâre a demon, right? Demons are selfish. Why would you agree to a lifelong contract⊠getting nothing in return?â
At my obvious question, the demon hit his chest in frustration.
âThatâs why normally we demand payment! Or we contract with someone interesting. Someone who kills people or starts wars, that kind of person.â
But I was neither. I had called the demonâs true name, so he could take no payment from me. And I wasnât exactly an entertaining human, so there was no reason for him to view me as a fun game.
âUh⊠canât my wish just be for you to go home?â
âNo. Thereâs only one way I can return to the demon realmâyour death.â
âOrdinarily, that would mean waiting until I dieâŠâ
But he was a demon. He could kill ordinary humans without a second thought. Could he kill me right here and return to the demon realm?
While I considered that, the demon approached me with a blank expression. He came close and wrapped one hand around my neck. Even in the suddenly warm air, his hand was cold. His grip was soft yet firm, and if he wanted, he could easily twist my neck.
Strangely, I didnât feel afraid. Calmly looking up at him, the demon let out a small chuckle.
âYou can feel it instinctively, canât you? That I canât kill you.â
The demon released my neck and raised both hands.
âFrom the moment weâre bound by this contract, I cannot harm you. You can rest easy on that.â
âI suppose you could still use tricks to get me killed quickly, like a hitman or something.â
âThen just make a wish to not do that.â
The demon, who had been pouting, tilted his head as if realizing something.
âWait⊠youâre telling me how I could kill you?â
âBut⊠you just told me how you canât kill me.â
The demon rolled his eyes in shock, clutching his head as if he had made a mistake.
âAh, damn it! I shouldnât have said that.â
âItâs too late.â
I smiled and made my wish immediately.
âDo not kill me. Directly or indirectly. I donât want to die.â
Even if it was in a book, this was my hard-earned second life.
âAnd I was born as a lucky nobleâdonât I at least want to enjoy the good life I missed in my first life before I die?â
The problem was this demon that suddenly appeared.
âIâm doomed⊠no payment, no killing⊠and of all people, it had to be a boring human who called me⊠completely ruinedâŠâ
I watched as the demon rested his chin in his hand, muttering âruinedâ over and over.
He was ridiculously handsome, as youâd expect from a demon who seduces humans. Not even the crown prince, considered the most handsome of Catherineâs five admirers, could compare.
âSilver hair and red eyes⊠Ebria has common reddish-brown hair and green eyes.â
His looks were unreal, almost like he didnât belong in this world.
âEven his stupid face, feeling guilty, somehow looks like a painting. Unbelievable.â
I sighed, staring at this extremely handsome demon.
âOkay. So Iâm responsible for you, right? After all, I called you here, so Iâll take that much responsibility.â
âResponsibilityâŠâ
The demon looked at me, holding his head, full of doubt and displeasure.
âHow do you plan to take responsibility?â
âFeed you, let you sleep, stuff like that.â
Being a dukeâs daughter, money wasnât a problem. She probably inherited a good fortune from her father.
âSo taking care of one person shouldnât be difficult.â
But then I remembered: this wasnât a normal human. Maybe he needed something other than ordinary food.
âLike a vampire drinking blood?â
Maybe thatâs why he was obsessed with blood earlier.
I asked quickly, just in case.
âYou eat like humans, right? I donât want to fetch anything weird. No blood or hearts or anything like that.â
The demon frowned in disbelief.
âHow do you see us? We eat bread and meat like civilized beings!â
âThen no problem.â
âNo problem? Eating and sleeping is your whole life? What about my fun? Demons live for pleasure!â
The demon shouted angrily. I let out a small laugh. This demon really didnât seem to understand what a boring life was.
âAh, the demon is full. Letâs see how boring life can get, then.â
âHmph. How could you?â
âYour contract says you must grant all my wishes. What if I wished you couldnât eat or sleep, and had to stare at the wall every day? Life would be so boring!â
The demonâs confident face turned pale.
âSo this was his face when I asked him to light the fireplace.â
Seeing his beaten-down expression, I realized I had won.
âOkay, feeding and letting you sleep counts as taking responsibility. You can find your own fun.â
The demon pouted but nodded. He looked displeased but had accepted it.
Now that Iâd roughly sorted out the situation with him, I had to decide what to tell others about him. His appearance was so striking that it would be hard to just explain it away.
âIâll need to use some trick.â
Just then, the demon poked my arm as I was thinking.
âHey, human.â
âYes?â
âAre you really not planning to start a warâŠâ
âNo.â
ââŠOkay.â
At my firm answer, the demon slumped his shoulders.
âEven though he doesnât have earsâŠâ
He looked like a disappointed big dog with drooping ears. Without thinking, I reached out and lightly patted his silver hair. The demon lifted his head and alternated glancing between my hand and my face, looking confused.
âWhatâs this hand doing?â
âUh⊠comforting?â
âFeels like youâre treating me like a regular dogâŠâ
Being a demon, he was surprisingly good at reading human emotions. I quickly diverted my gaze and changed the subject.
âSo, what should I call you? I canât just keep calling you Demon all the time.â
It was an important point. I didnât want to add to his fame as âthe demon I summoned.â
âDo you have a preferred name? Iâll use that.â
âDoesnât matter. Whatever you want to call me is fine.â
âHmm⊠so I can call you Mengchang, right? Mr. Mengchang?â
âHey! Thatâs not it!â
The demon shoved my hand away.
âIâm smart! Not stupid!â
âThen tell me what to call you. Otherwise, Iâll call you Mr. Mengchang.â
âUgh, seriously⊠why did I get summoned by someone like thisâŠ.â
The demon grumbled, ruffling his hair.
âAnother regret moment, huh?â
Since he controlled fire, he seemed to generate a lot of body heat.
I looked disinterestedly at the fireplace, waiting for him to burn off the heat. Gradually, his grumbling faded. Soon, silence settled, and after a while, I heard his voice in my ear.
âHarry.â
âHarry?â
âWhen someone calls me, thatâs usually the name. My real name isnât even used among family.â
âAh, that makes sense. Your real name is for contracts. Did your previous contractor call you Harry?â
âYouâre my second contractor. The first was a fool who wanted to be king, and he didnât care about my name. He only wanted my power.â
âSo Iâm the first human to call you Harry?â
ââŠ.â
The demonâno, Harryâturned red. Realizing his face was heating up, he hastily covered it with his hands.
âD-Donât give that any weird meaning!â
âWhen did I give it meaning?â
âYou did! Just now!â
âIâm just stating a fact.â
âHey human, how can you stay so calm after saying something so embarrassing?â
âEmbarrassing?â
âThen itâs not embarrassing? Wow, youâre scarier than I thought.â
I sighed again, looking at Harry, who had started pouting.
âI just wanted to light the fireplaceâŠâ
I think I accidentally summoned a slightly high-maintenance demon.
