Chapter 17:
The bedroom had already been tidied up by Hazel. I washed up neatly on my own and changed into my pajamas.
âAhh, this feels great!â
The sleeves were a bit long, so I made sure to fold them up properly. After that, I dove straight onto the bed.
Uncle was sitting at an angle on the sofa in the corner of my room, reading some documents. It seemed someone had brought them to him while I was washing.
âDonât tell me youâre planning to watch me fall asleep before leaving?â
âIâm staying to finish these documents. Donât get the wrong idea.â
Uncle glanced up slightly and looked at me as I wriggled under the blankets.
âThen you could just go work in your officeâŠâ
âI couldnât finish because of someone. The estate is apparently on the verge of collapse.â
âW-what?! That canât happen. Then you should work hard before you goâŠâ
It definitely couldnât collapse. Absolutely not.
I nodded absentmindedly, not really listening anymore. Sleep was already taking over my mind.
Running around all day had completely drained my energy.
âRuby.â
At Uncleâs call, I forced my eyes open.
âYeah?â
âYou know where Uncleâs bedroom is, right?â
âUpstairsâŠâ
âIf you suddenly wake up in the middle of the night, come find me.â
ââŠOnce I fall asleep, I donât wake up easily.â
I heard Uncle stand up.
Then footsteps followed. The bed dipped slightly to one side. A large, warm hand brushed over my forehead.
âIf you suddenly feel like you hate the dark, or if scary thoughts come to you.â
ââŠOkay, I will.â
I nodded with half-closed eyes. Soon, Uncleâs calloused hand gently covered my eyes.
Everything around me quickly faded into darkness.
âTurn on the light while you read⊠youâll ruin your eyesâŠâ
An irresistible wave of sleep washed over me. I was really at my limit now.
âGood night, Ruby.â
ââŠâŠâ
âTodayâŠâ
The world slowly sank into silence.
What had he been about to say next?
That he was thankful? That he was happy?
Whatever it was, I was sure it had been filled with warmth.
3
A few more days passed.
Uncle was the kind of person who kept his word.
Of course, he was so busy that it was difficult to have every meal together, but he still tried to spend time with us at least once a day. That alone was enough to make Void look satisfied.
âHmm, things are going smoothly.â
I was currently lying around after stuffing myself full at lunch.
Looks like Iâve adapted pretty well here, havenât I?
âNow itâs about time I started movingâŠâ
Then suddenly, a thought struck me and I shot upright.
A cold sensation ran down the back of my neck. Wait a minute.
âAm I forgetting something important?!â
It felt like Iâd forgotten about another person in this houseâŠ
Just then, knock knockâsomeone knocked and the door opened.
âHazel?â
âLady Rubian, itâs snack time!â
Ah, well, letâs recharge my sugar first.
âOkay!â
Hazel smiled softly. Over the past few days, I had gotten quite close to her and was already treating her comfortably.
When I headed to the tea room near my bedroom, I saw there was already a guest.
âWhy do you keep wandering around working instead of staying in your office?â
He was signing documents with one hand while lifting his gaze slightly to look at meâhis annoyingly handsome face as calm as ever.
âBecause I feel like it. Itâs my castle.â
Well, that was true.
âYouâre late.â
When I plopped down onto the fluffy sofa, Uncle scolded me for no real reason.
Recently, heâd become obsessed with pressuring the chef into making all kinds of new desserts. The chef claimed she had suggested it first, but⊠who knows?
Of course, tasting new snacks was fun. But I was honestly worried the poor chef might be overworked.
âWhat a terrible employer, seriouslyâŠâ
Iâd noticed it back in the capital too, but Uncle seemed to enjoy eating quite a lot.
He didnât shy away from even the sweetest desserts.
Well, I suppose to maintain such a huge body, he needed to eat wellâŠ
âBut still, making the chef suffer every single day!â
âSo what did I do wrong this time?â
Uncle waved his hand at meâthe one with small teeth marks on the back.
âYouâre not a kitten, you knowâŠâ
âJust because! Iâm avenging the chef!â
âWhat are you even talking about?â
Uncle muttered as he helped me sit deeper into the sofa.
âItâs been a while since lunch. I shouldnât let you get hungry.â
For some reason, he sounded displeased.
âI ate a lot, so Iâm not really hungryâŠâ
âI am.â
ââŠâŠâ
Well, if he says so, I guess I have nothing to argue.
Clink, clink. A pleasant snack time began.
âHow is it?â he asked.
âItâs delicious.â
âYou havenât even eaten it yet.â
Only then did I poke at the strawberry cream cake in front of me and take a bite.
âItâs delicious.â
âYou really canât let your guard down around you.â
As the sweetness spread through my mouth, it felt like the top of my head tingled.
âAfter you finish, letâs go to the annex together.â
âThe annex?â
âThe old man being this quiet is suspicious. We should act first before he causes trouble.â
Uncle Leviathan muttered carelessly.
If he said âold man,â thenâŠ
âThe old Duke of Gebert?â
Now that I thought about it, I had been thinking about him earlier and forgot!
âHe wasnât a very important character in the original story, though.â
Maybe that was why heâd stayed quiet?
I blinked silently.
Across from me, Uncle was sitting lazily on the sofa, devouring his slice of cake in just three bites.
âSo⊠the old Duke is staying in the annex?â
âYeah. He rarely comes this far.â
Uncle crossed his legs and sipped his tea. With such elegant movements, he really did look like a proper grand noble.
âHave you heard anything about him?â
âJust bits and pieces people whispered.â
I brushed it off vaguely.
âI heard heâs sick.â
âHe is, but⊠heâs fine. Actually, he hates it even more when people fuss over him.â
The next words he said were so quiet I barely caught them.
âWait a second.â
That cold feeling ran down my neck again.
âIs it really rude that I havenât gone to greet a sick elder yet?â
And I was basically a stranger whoâd suddenly rolled into this family!
âWhat if he already dislikes me?â
Thankfully, no one in the castle seemed to hate me so far.
But if the old Duke didâŠ
If he told me to go back to the capitalâŠ
Perhaps sensing my uneasy silence, Uncle spoke again.
âDonât worry. I told you, if anyone bothers you, Uncle will scold them.â
âWhat kind of person is the old Duke?â
âHmmâŠâ
Uncle looked up at the ceiling for a moment.
âAn angry lion?â
ââŠ?â
I stared at him blankly at that confusing description, and his dark purple eyes turned to me.
âYeah. A little bean like you might get eaten up in no time.â
I scoffed lightly.
âLions are carnivores. They donât eat beans.â
âShould I call that mature⊠or childishâŠâ
Uncle laughed softly and tapped the tip of my nose.
Pink cream was smeared on his rough fingertip.
When did that get there? How embarrassing.
âYour Grace, would you like more?â
âOf course.â
Seeing him confidently hold out his plate, I felt a bit exasperated.
âWhy are you eating cake like itâs your birthday?â
âItâs delicious.â
Looking at him, youâd expect him to finish a meal with bitter espresso or strong brandy and say, âThis will suffice.â
Tastes really are unpredictable.
âEat more first. Otherwise, Iâm not taking you anywhere.â
âUgh⊠fineâŠâ
I picked up my fork again.
Maybe because of all the sweetness, my worries about the old Duke faded a little.
âHmm, strawberry cream is better than the chestnut cream from yesterday!â
I should tell the chef later.
âAhh, Iâm so full.â
As I patted my stomach, Uncle tapped the table.
âSeems a bit early to be putting down your fork.â
âBut Iâm full! I ate lots at lunch!â
âYou only nibbled.â
âNo I didnât!â
Iâm not a mouse!
âIf you leave it like that, our chef will be sad. Right?â
âOf course. Sheâd be heartbroken.â
The attendant placing strawberry milk in front of me chimed in.
Ugh. Itâs always important to keep the person who feeds you happyâŠ
After a moment of hesitation, I picked up one shy strawberry buried in cream and ate it.
I scooped up some of the fluffy cake too, and Uncle grinned.
âNow sheâll be pleased.â
Are strawberries bigger in the North or something?
My cheeks puffed up like a hamsterâs. The soft cream and tangy juice filled my mouth.
âMmrrmmrm.â
âGrumbling with your mouth full wonât help.â
Ah, Iâve been caughtâŠ
CRASH!
Right at that moment, a thunderous boom shook the entire castle.
âAhh!â
The four-tier tray on the table rattled, and a faint vibration followed.
Boom. BOOM!
âW-what⊠hic!â
Startled out of my mind, I swallowed the cake without chewingâand ended up with hiccups.
Uncle frowned deeply and reached toward me.
âDid you bite your tongue? Let me see.â
âIs that really what matters right now?!â
âDrink the milk first.â
Explosions, big and small, kept going off one after another.
Milk or not, my head whipped around in panic.
âHah⊠he really couldnât hold back any longer.â
âIs it an attack?!â
âYes⊠and no.â
What kind of nonsense answer was that?
But the strangest thing wasâI was the only one in this room who looked shocked.
Everyone else calmly steadied shaking decorations or straightened crooked picture frames like this was perfectly normal.
âMy lord, what should we do?â
âIf we lock it, heâll just break down the walls, right?â
âWithout a doubt.â
Listening to Uncle and the attendant talk only made me more confused.
Boom boom boom.
Something was getting closer.
It sounded like a charging bullâor the furious footsteps of an enraged giant.
âFor now, Ruby, drink your milk. Stop hiccupping.â
Uncle gestured to the strawberry milk in front of me. I reached for the mug in a daze.
CRASH!
At that moment, the thick door flew open.
âWhere is the new little brat?!â
